The match was a fierce battle between two strong Brazilian clubs, with Flamengo leading 1-0 after just ten minutes and Palmeiras trailing 1-0 at halftime.
In the second half, Marcelo Pinto stepped up his game, using his wing play to create chances for Flamengo's goal. He scored from a penalty kick following a corner kick that Palmeiras goalkeeper Fernando Lopes saved, giving Flamengo the lead.
Pinto's goal came on the back of a well-taken shot from the left side of the box that was flicked over the Palmeiras defense. The ball flew past Lopes' palm before flying into the net, sealing Flamengo's victory.
"I am really happy," said Flamengo captain Marcelo Pinto. "It is a great feeling to be able to win our first home match in the new stadium."
Palmeiras, on the other hand, were not able to capitalize on their good chances. They had a few attempts but could only get one goal in the entire game.
"Unfortunately, we couldn't find the right moments to take advantage of our opportunities," said Palmeiras coach Paulo Fonseca. "We have to work harder next time to come out victorious."
